40 people stranded in Crossfield multi-vehicle crash

More than 40 people are stranded on Highway 2 near Crossfields after two multi-vehicle crashes Saturday morning.

Highway 2 has been shut down near the Highway 72 overpass. The crash apparently involves a jack-knifed semi and multiple vehicles up against a fence.

"We have a bus coming in to grab folks and take them into the reception centre for now until we can get highway conditions improved," said Ben Niven, Chief of Crossfield's fire department.

Two people sustained serious injuries and have been transported to a Calgary hospital.

All northbound traffic along Highway 2 is blocked at Highway 72.

Highway 2 southbound is also blocked.

RCMP have issued multiple warnings about blowing snow and slippery roads making for dangerous driving conditions.

People are being advised to avoid travel on highways in the area.
