Suspect arrested in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu dépanneur homicide

La Sûreté du Québec has made one arrest in relation to the beating death of a 25-year-old man in a dépanneur in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, southeast of Montreal.

Police said Chao Peng was attacked in the store with a blunt object and was found lying unconscious in the convenience store at around 10 a.m. Saturday.

Peng was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"From the beginning, it was considered a suspicious death," said SQ Sgt. Ingrid Asselin. "We confirmed that this is a homicide because of some elements observed at the scene."

The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was arrested early Sunday morning in Cowansville.

Asselin said the SQ does not have a lot of details, however, the preliminary investigation does not indicate that the homicide took place during a robbery.

"The relationship the victim had with the business is not determined, but we can confirm that he was not the property owner," said Asselin.
