Lou Hyndman was 78.
Hyndman was one of six Progressive Conservatives voted in as opposition members in 1967.
Four years later, the PCs under Peter Lougheed won a majority government, and the party has been in power ever since.
Hyndman served in cabinet in a number of portfolios, including treasurer, before retiring from politics in 1986.
Premier Alison Redford says Hyndman will be remembered for his service to Alberta both in government and as chancellor of the University of Alberta.
