Charges laid in Quebec in death of B.C. First Nations elder

A woman arrested in Quebec City Sunday has been charged in the death of a B.C. Kwantlen elder, who was found shot to death in 2011 in B.C.'s Lower Mainland.

George Antone, 71, of the Kwantlen First Nation, was found dead in his home on reserve land near Fort Langley in March 2011.

B.C.'s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team announced Tuesday that Michelle Serdar, 42, has been charged in Quebec with second degree murder in connection with Antone's death.

Serdar will be travelling to B.C. to appear in court within the next week, police said.

TumiaKnott, speaking for the Kwantlen First Nation, read a statement Tuesday at the police announcement on behalf of Antone's family and community.

"We look at today as one step closer for closure on this matter for our family who have been through so much," Knott said.

"We await the judicial process to begin, as we continue to remember and mourn the loss of our dear Elder."
