Seventeen of the sled tour dogs who survived an infamous 2010 massacre still need homes, says the BC SPCA.
The dogs are available at the organization's Burnaby, Victoria, Sunshine Coast, and West Vancouver branches, according to a press release.
The SPCA has already found homes for over 75 of the Whistler Sled Dog Company's former dogs, who lost their jobs when the business failed.
“Many of the dogs are very affectionate and sociable,” says Kim Monteith, animal welfare manager for the BC SPCA, in the release.
“They've been used for tours so they are accustomed to being around people and other dogs and are very friendly. Others are really wonderful dogs but they are a bit nervous around people, so they will just need a patient guardian to help them get used to being in a family.”
Monteith says the dogs do best when they are adopted with another sled dog or when there is another dog already in the home. The SPCA is looking for owners who will give the dogs outdoor access, but still make sure they are included in indoor family life.
