It’s a time to reflect, to critique and to wonder what people may have been thinking. Yes, it’s December and year-end discussions are upon us – and this time, they come in the form of the best and worst dressed celebrities on the red carpet in 2013.

From the AMAs to the Oscars, we have most of the relevant red carpet events covered. But if there’s someone you think we’re missing, feel free to weigh in and sing your praises in the comments bellow or on Twitter. (Of us and of them, naturally.)

Best: Jennifer Lawrence, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" L.A. Premiere

Best And Worst Dressed Celebs In 2013

1. Best: Jennifer Lawrence, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" L.A. Premiere

Is there anything Jennifer Lawrence can’t do? (No. She’s wonderful and we want her to be friends with us.) So while most of us would be unable to carry off a sheer skirt and body suit, J-Law rose to the occasion in her Dior gown, proving why the label has enlisted her as their go-to, and why anything she touches (even pixie cuts) turns to gold.

2. Best: Miley Cyrus, Bambi Awards, 2013

Miley got a lot of slack this year for, well, anything she did, but when it came to red carpet looks, there’s nothing anyone can say. Case in point: Her full-length black gown at Germany’s Bambi Awards (in contrast to the AMAs' white power suit), which is a testament for Cyrus’ eye for style. The "Wrecking Ball" singer was so polarizing that she was named Time magazine's best and worst-dressed of the year.

3. Worst: Taylor Swift, CMT Music Awards

Listen. It’s important you know that we’re all behind Taylor Swift 99.9% of the time, and that most of her red carpet looks absolutely bring it. That said, this 2003-esque sparkly nude-toned number felt more prom dress than patron saint of country-pop, and as evidenced by Taylor’s fashion evolution, she’s moved on from the type of formal wear most of us would wear to weddings.

4. Worst: Katy Perry, MTV Video Music Awards

Originality is important, but when it comes to animal print, sequined butterflies, turtlenecks, and thigh-high slits, it’s important to know when to say when. In a word: Okay. In more words: Okay, there is a lot happening with this dress, all of which are conspiring to take over the world, we think.

5. Best: Jessica Chastain, The Academy Awards

The only person to rival Jessica Chastain at the 2013 Academy Awards (in her Giorgio Armani gown) is Jessica Chastain at any other red carpet event. The "Zero Dark Thirty" actress knows what fit of dress works, what cut of dress works, and what colours of dresses work, so Ms. Chastain, if you’re reading this, teach us your ways.

6. Worst: Florence Welch, 2013 Grammys

Florence Welch is in a league of Steve Nicks (she’s mystical, and likely above us in most ways), which is why the singer's custom-made Givenchy gown was unfair: She deserved better, no matter how popular "The Hobbit" made dragons this year. (But in her defense, thanks to "Game of Thrones," most of us would choose a spike-clad dress, too.)

7. Best: Amy Poehler, 2013 Golden Globes

Amy Poehler’s fashion sense only got better and better this year – which is saying a lot since even at January’s Golden Globes, she knocked it out of the park in her black Stella McCartney suit. (You can’t help but think it was a black-tie tribute to the ever-wonderful – and pant-suit wearing -- Leslie Knope.)

8. Best: Michelle Dockery, 2013 Emmy Awards

How dare Michelle Dockery successfully carry off a halter-top neckline and a full, ankle-length skirt? While some of us would find ourselves smothered in fabric, the "Downton Abbey" star rose up to Prada’s creation, contrasting the gown’s red and burgundy tones with her dark hair and embellished clutch. Mary Crawley would be proud.

9. Worst: Lady Gaga, 2013 American Music Awards

Dressed in Versace while looking like Donatella Versace herself (the hair, especially, but maybe Donatella also rides into award shows via horse), Lady Gaga stood true to herself by going over-the-top – which somehow didn’t seem like enough, even with the medallion wrapped around the gown. Do we need Gaga to always be on? Maybe – though even while playing variations of “normal” people on "Saturday Night Live" she still looked awesome.

10. Best: Anne Hathaway, 2013 Golden Globes

While her Oscars dress was fine (but somehow seemed a little too ‘90s), Anne Hathaway’s Chanel dress at the Golden Globes was just ‘90s enough thanks to its mix of sleekness, and, well being two pieces. Embellished in crystals – which explain her lack of jewelry – the award-winner’s choice for simplicity worked well with her pixie cut and Golden Globe.

11. We’re Stuck: Lena Dunham, 2013 Emmy Awards

Here’s the thing: Lena Dunham carries off almost everything – including the haircut she gave herself in the "Girls" season 2 finale. But that said, despite the awesomeness that is her Delia’s-inspired Prada gown, there’s a disconnect between the print, and the fabric, and the amount of fabric. Obviously, she’s not the “worst,” but arguably, Dunham’s the most “controversial” – so maybe that’s her unique place on our list this year.

12. Best: Elisabeth Moss, 2013 SAG Awards

While Peggy Olson has only been getting better and better on "Mad Men" (please let’s remember her pant suit from this year’s season finale), Elisabeth Moss has been following in her footsteps, especially via the Dolce and Gabbana ensemble at the 2013 SAGs. A sequined skirt balanced with a lace top is just formal enough (and proves you don’t necessarily need to go floor length at awards shows).

13. Best: Kristen Stewart, 2013 Oscars

We didn’t’ see much of Kristen Stewart this year, but despite that, she topped best-dressed lists world-over thanks to her embellished Reem Acra Oscar gown. Accessorized by crutches, the actress still managed to look on-point – especially when reunited with pal Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet.

14. Best: Zooey Deschanel, 2013 Emmy Awards

Like J-Law and her sheer Dior, not a lot of people could pull off a giant bow at the side of a satin dress. But, enter: Zooey Deschanel in a powder blue J. Mendel gown that worked perfectly with her crystal (and icy-looking) clutch. Arguably, if “cool, calm, and collected” had a style sense, this would be it.

15. Worst: Jennifer Lopez, Celebrity Fight Night XIX

Jennifer Lopez is a powerful woman. Ballerinas are equally so. But for reasons we don’t understand, somehow JLo’s homage to ballet dancers somehow falls flat, likely thanks to its ankle length, lace placement, and too many similarities to something we may have seen in "Center Stage." Though she can dance – so maybe the laugh’s on us.
