SantaCon Vancouver public pub crawl draws hundreds

Hundreds of people dressed as Santa Claus in Vancouver on Saturday to take part in the annual convergence of Santas known as SantaCon.

SantaCon, which is also called 'Santarchy,' is an annual event that began in San Francisco in 1994 and now takes place in cities all over the world.

Santarchy participants dress up like Santa or other Christmastime characters and sometimes take part in informal pub crawls.

In Vancouver, the 2013 SantaCon began at 11 a.m. PT in the Downtown Eastside at the No. 5 Orange strip club.

After leaving the first stop, the Santas moved south along Main Street through Chinatown to the Ivanhoe Pub.

From there, the merry band was spotted moving farther south along Main Street, towards the site of the Olympic Athletes Village.

A website tracking the St. Nicks says similar gatherings are happening in 300 cities in 44 countries this year.
