Two cougars that were believed to be involved in two separate dog attacks in the Canmore area have been euthanized.

After being let outside by its owner on Sunday, a local dog was attacked and killed. An Alberta Fish and Wildlife officer found an adult female cougar with the dead dog, CTV News reports. The officer shot the cougar to death.

When the officer went back to the scene of the attack later on, he found a second cougar, who he also killed.

Another dog was killed earlier in the week, on Thursday; according to the Rocky Mountain Outlook, officials believe the same cougar was responsible for both attacks.

"These cougars are believed to have been working together," said Brendan Cox, a public affairs officer with Alberta Justice, to CBC News.

The cougars were killed because they didn't demonstrate any fear of humans and appeared to be using the dogs as a source of food, Cox added.

Fish and Wildlife officer David Dickson told CTV News that the officers had no choice.

"It’s a decision that has to be made," he said. "We look at it from a public safety point of view. We removed a threat to the community that may have ramped up to a larger threat."
