That's a month longer than the current limit of six months.
Dave Quest, associate minister for seniors, says the change takes effect immediately.
He says it allows Albertans to travel for longer periods of time without worrying about health coverage.
The change puts Alberta in line with Ontario, British Columbia and Manitoba.
Albertans who plan to be out of the province for extended periods are urged to contact Alberta Health to make sure their coverage remains current.
