Prince Edward Island eliminates $150 ambulance patient transfer fee

CHARLOTTETOWN - A $150 fee that was charged to patients transferring from one hospital to another in Prince Edward Island has been eliminated.

The provincial government says all ambulance transfers between hospitals will now be provided for free.

Health Minister Doug Currie also says the government will introduce an ambulance dedicated to transferring patients between facilities.

Currie says that ambulance will be able to transfer up to four patients at a time, beginning in early January.

He says it will also free up other ambulances to respond to emergencies.

The government says the new ambulance is expected to cost $105,000.
