Part of the 401 scheduled to close Sunday night

The route to Pearson Airport will be closed in part late Sunday night and early Monday morning — affecting travel to the airport on what is among the busiest days of the year for flights.

The eastbound collector lane on highway 401 will be closed completely from Dufferin Street to Allen Road this weekend.

The closure is scheduled 11:30 p.m. on Sunday to 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

Officials say the closure will only go ahead if weather permits. So with freezing rain and ice warnings continuing throughout Saturday, weather could cancel the planned closure.

In addition, Monday is known as the busiest travel day of the year. That stretch of the highway is used to get to Pearson Airport.

According to the ministry of transportation, the closure will affect motorists in the following ways:

- Motorists travelling eastbound in the collectors will be forced to exit the highway at Dufferin Street/Yorkdale Road;

- On-ramps to Highway 401 eastbound collectors from Allen Road northbound and southbound will be closed;

- Off-ramps from Highway 401 eastbound collectors to Allen Road northbound and southbound will be closed;

- Express to collector transfer at Allen Road will be closed for the duration of the closure.
