Melissa Landry, St. FX student, dies volunteering in Tanzania

A young woman studying at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S., has died while volunteering at an orphanage in Africa.

Melissa Landry, a graduating fourth year human kinetics student, died from her injuries after a motor vehicle crash in Tanzania, according to a statement from the university.

“Melissa received her X-ring just prior to leaving overseas and was looking forward to graduating this spring with her many friends and classmates. An active member of the St. F.X. community, she will be forever remembered for her generous spirit,” vice-president Ramsay Duff wrote in an email.

Landry, who was from Antigonish, was volunteering with an organization called HQ International Volunteer.

The university says counselling and chaplaincy services will be available for all students when classes resume.
