Joffrey Lupul faces NHL hearing for cross-check

The Toronto Maple Leafs just can't seem to stay away from the NHL's player safety department.

The Leafs' Joffrey Lupul will have a hearing with the NHL on Friday afternoon after cross-checking Detroit's Patrick Eaves during the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Five Leafs have already been handed suspensions since the start of pre-season games: David Clarkson, Phil Kessel, Carter Ashton, Nazem Kadri and Dion Phaneuf.

The Lupul incident occurred midway through the opening period of the Winter Classic when Lupul hit Eaves near the head and neck area with his stick. Lupul was assessed a two-minute minor on the play. Eaves left the game and did not return.

Lupul was suspended last season for two games for a head shot on Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Victor Hedman.

Lupul has 21 points in 33 games this season.
