Barriere RCMP Const. Jesse Wilkins says a critically injured mastiff-cross, and another that was already dead, were found in early December on a rural property about 45 kilometres north of Kamloops.
The dog owner, who lives on a neighbouring property, rushed the injured pet to a veterinarian, but its spine was shattered and it could not be saved.
Investigators believe the dog may have suffered for as long as 24 hours before it was found.
Wilkins says wildlife officers and members of the BC SPCA took part in the investigation.
He says the matter falls under the Criminal Code and police expect to forward animal cruelty charges to Crown for consideration. (CHNL)
