Tug Boat Sinks, Leaving Oil Slick In Howe Sound

An old derelict tug boat has sunk in Howe Sound near the government dock in Squamish, spilling diesel fuel into the the waters of Mamquam Blind Channel, CBC News has learned.

Witnesses report a fuel slick can be seen on the water. There was nobody aboard the boat at the time of the sinking.

The coast guard and other officials are on the scene assessing the situation, according to spokesman Dan Bate.

"Currently crews are en route to Squamish with booms and absorbents to contain whatever fuel they can. Initial reports suggest pollution has spread to an area in the channel and crews will assess their next steps once they are on scene."
