Beauty has always been a point of contention. Who is beautiful? Is there such thing as universal beauty or is it in the eye of the beholder?

Unconventional beauties are often glanced at initially and deemed unattractive. But, when we bother to take a second look, we realize that they actually stand out in a crowd in the most refreshing way.

Hollywood has a number of unconventional beauties we’d like to tip our hats to, but before we begin, lets get one thing straight: unconventional beauty doesn't equate to ugly; it’s beauty outside the mold and something we should celebrate more often.

Zosia Mamet

The "Girls” star isn’t the picture of conventional beauty: she’s even better. The stylish long-haired brunette, who plays Shoshanna Shapiro on the show, walks with confidence and oozes charisma. She was recently featured in ASOS magazine, looking as perfect as ever.

Tilda Swinton

The actress rocks the fairest of features, an angular face and her tall & lean frame. The androgynous beauty played the White Witch in "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" and it probably wasn’t hard to transform her, given her signature otherworldly look. Not only does Tilda have one of the most interesting faces on the planet but she's a style icon who can wear outfits no other actress would dare try on.

Lena Dunham

There’s much debate about the "Girls" actress/creator. Although Vogue just featured her on their February 2014 cover (with a bit of controversy, we might add), the 27-year-old still doesn't have the "iconic" status as say, someone like Keira Knightley or Jennifer Lawrence. But her beautiful wide eyes, her cherubic features and her amazing pixie cut make her someone totally worth staring at.

Sofia Coppola

The "Lost In Translation" director has facial features that could be described as masculine but in combination with her pouty lips and killer style, we think she’s the pinnacle of effortless beauty and elegance. Coppola may not be walking the Victoria Secret runway but she has, in our opinion, a much more fun job. Plus, Marc Jacobs thinks she's cool.

Lily Cole

We realize Lily Cole is by all accounts a successful model, which would signify conventional beauty. However, we think we’d be doing a disservice to the fiery Brit by calling her such . Like Tilda Swinton, Cole has an otherworldly look that's almost pixie-like. Intrigue is her best asset as well as her stunning wide-set blue eyes.

Helena Bonham Carter

The actress embraces her unconventional beauty like no other. In fact, she flaunts it every chance she can get on the red carpet (remember her wild curly hair and mismatched shoes at the 2011 Golden Globes?).

Her partner, director Tim Burton, uses Helena's haunting gaze for many of his films and we love seeing her quirky face pop up in the "Harry Potter" series.

Mindy Kaling

Recently, the comedienne was forced to address her unconventional beauty when critics said her Elle cover perpetuated the marginalization of women of colour and those who don’t fit the Hollywood mold. While this may be true, her show, “The Mindy Project” showcases a woman who represents the average sized woman in the best of lights who has an amazing mane and beautiful brown eyes.

Lady Gaga

Sometimes we think the quirky singer is trying to hide something behind all her elaborate costumes. If that’s the case, we’d like to tell Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta that we’re a fan of her stripped down look too. Gaga is another unconventional beauty we admire for making it big without being a buxom blond.

Sarah Jessica Parker

SJP has always been known as an unconventional beauty (that wild curly hair! that beautiful long shnoze! that wide mouth!). While she doesn't seem to make any Hot 100 lists (and ew, anyway) we love that she embraces her unique features and highlights them with gorgeous clothes, flattering makeup and a mane to die for.

Lindsey Wixson

It probably took an agent with a sharp eye to see the huge modelling potential in unconventional beauty, Lindsey Wixson. The model, who says she was relentlessly teased in her youth, now sports her gap-toothed smile and pouty lips on the runways for Atelier Versace, Miu Miu, Missoni and Moschino (See? It does get better after high school).
