Montreal Woman Dead After Scarf Caught In Subway Station Escalator

A woman is dead after her scarf got caught in an escalator at a Montreal subway station, police have confirmed. The incident happened Thursday morning at Fabre metro station, the CBC reports.

Emergency responders were called to the scene around 9:15 a.m., TVA reports.

Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant told the network that the woman's scarf and hair were caught in the escalator. The woman was reportedly in her 30s.

Brabant said it was too early to tell whether the woman was strangled by the scarf, or if an illness caused her to collapse on the escalator.

One witness told police it appeared that the woman's scarf got caught first, CTV reported. Her hair got caught in the escalator when she bent over to unhook her scarf.

Police will be reviewing surveillance camera footage to help determine exactly what happened.
