Standoff at Hamilton City Centre mall ends 'peacefully'

A police standoff at a mall in downtown Hamilton that started early Sunday morning has ended.

Officers had been “dealing with an emotionally disturbed person” at the Hamilton City Centre since 1 a.m., Staff Sgt. Mike Spencer said.

The standoff concluded "peacefully" after 12 hours and the man has been taken into care, Spencer said.

The mall, which is located at 77 James St. N and is connected to Jackson Square, was closed on Sunday as a result of the confrontation.

At 3 p.m., Spencer said the mall would be reopening shortly.
