A childish “knock knock” joke about sex has gotten the Canadian version of the E! network in hot water.
It all began with an episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” that aired Oct. 23, in the 4 p.m. time slot, in which the inexplicably famous Kourtney Kardashian engaged in an argument with her boyfriend over who would perform anal sex on whom.
E! network will have to broadcast a notice twice, notifying viewers of the Kardashians’ reality show that the network violated broadcast standards by airing the episode in a 4 p.m. time slot without a viewer advisory, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CBSC) ruled this week.
The ruling evidently stemmed from a single viewer complaint.
Warning: Graphic and immature language follows
“Knock, knock. Who’s there? It’s my penis knocking on your back door,” Kourtney Kardashian said at one point in the episode, reading a text message from her boyfriend Scott Disick.
In another segment, Kourtney “used a carrot and chocolate donut to simulate the act, following which Scott used a cucumber and a candy gummy ring,” the CBSC noted.
In another scene, Kourtney chases Scott around with a purple dildo. When asked what she planned to do with it, she replied, “Break you open.”
E! network initially defended itself against the complaint by arguing that “the sexual act itself is not explicitly described ... rather, the subject is addressed through euphemisms.” But the network did say it should have aired a viewer advisory beforehand.
The CBSC ruled that the broadcast didn’t violate the rule requiring sexually explicit material to be aired after 9 p.m., but did violate the rule that requires a warning before “sexually suggestive” content.
The Canadian version of E! network is owned by Bell Media.
