Canada's medal count put the nation ahead of the United States in the Olympic standings Friday, putting added pressure on the men's hockey team to defeat team USA in the semifinals.
As of Friday morning, the medal table looked like this.
UPDATE: Canada defeated Britain in men's curling Friday to add a ninth gold to Canada's medal count.
While behind in total medals, Canada is ahead of the U.S. on the official table on the strength of silver medals (due to a tie in gold medals).
Canada scored a gold and silver in women's skicross Friday and has a chance to win another gold in men's curling. There is also the potential for Canada to win medals in short-track speedskating Friday.
But the all-important contest, for national identity and the medal standings, is the showdown with Team USA in men's hockey. Coach Mike Babcock is keeping the lineup static for Team Canada heading into the big game. A win Friday would not only make another Canadian gold possible but deny one from the United States as well.
Canada's women defeated the USA in sudden death on Thursday, putting even more pressure on Canada's star-studded men's squad to perform.
