Dr. George Doodnaught, the Toronto anesthesiologist sentenced in February to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting female patients while they were undergoing surgery, will find out this morning whether he will be granted bail pending his appeal.
Doodnaught is appealing his November conviction on 21 sexual assaults. He has asked the judge to free him on bail while he awaits his hearing, which could be two years away. The decision is expected at around 10:30 a.m. ET.
Most of the assaults involved women in the operating room at North York General Hospital. During his trial, the victims testified that Doodnaught kissed them, fondled their breasts and in some cases, put his penis in their mouth or hand.
The Crown has told the appeal judge it would shake public confidence in the justice system if Doodnaught is released considering the seriousness of the crimes. But Doodnaught's lawyer has told the court his client has support in the community and would not reoffend because his medical licence is suspended.
Eli Brooks, one of Doodnaught's victims, believes even though the doctor is unlikely to assault any more women, he should remain in prison pending his appeal.
The women are bracing themselves for the possibility Doodnaught could get bail.
Doodnaught did not have a criminal record before he committed the sexual assaults.
