When Is Earth Hour? What Is It? What Can I Do In The Dark?

Earth Hour is happening from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time on March 29. If you're not sure what to do with 60 minutes in the dark, we have a few ideas for you.

Every year, for an hour, people all over the world are encouraged to turn off their lights to raise awareness for environmental issues, in an effort that is promoted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million people and 2,100 business participated in an hour of darkness.

From there it has grown into a global movement, with landmarks like the CN Tower, Niagara Falls, the Empire State Building and the Las Vegas Strip all going dark for an hour.

The WWF crowned Vancouver as Earth Hour Capital last year, recognizing its focus on urban development with green targets.

But how do you entertain yourself in the dark? Let us count the ways.

  • Hold a candlelit dinner

    Because, romance.

All you need is a burner, a bowl of chocolate and lots of strawberries. Actually, this is way better than a candlelit dinner.
  • Eat all the food in your freezer
That melting ice cream isn't going to eat itself!
  • Take a walk around the neighbourhood

Take a lantern and shine it in the windows of neighbours who aren't participating.
  • Stargazing

With the city lights out, it may be easier to see the night sky from a telescope. Drop by the nearest observatory and see if you can spot the Milky Way.
  • Play a game of Ouija
The darkness makes it even tougher to guess who's pushing the pointer.
  • Bonfire

Head down to the beach, roast dogs and marshmallows, and tell some scary stories.
  • Shadow puppets
Wind up a LED flashlight behind a sheet pretend your hand is a dog chasing a rabbit.
  • Camp in the backyard

Put up a tent out back and pretend it's summer!
  • Play poker by candlelight

Can't read my, can't read my, no you (literally) can't read my, poker face!
  • And finally...
Take a nap. Turn out the lights and just nod off for an hour.
