Gabriel and Oliver Mironov Identified As Father And Son Killed In Lake Louise Avalanche

Father And Son Killed In Avalanche Identified

The father and son whose bodies were discovered in an Alberta avalanche over the weekend have been identified as 33-year-old Gabriel Mironov and his 11-year-old son, Oliver.

According to CBC News, the pair, visiting Alberta from Montreal, were last seen at the Chateau Lake Louise hotel, when they rented a toboggan on March 9.

Five days later they were reported missing after they failed to check out of the hotel.

A Parks Canada release says RCMP requested the aid of Parks Canada Search and Rescue personnel to help search for the two Saturday afternoon.

The release says a Parks Canada dog handler found the victims buried under debris at the base of Mount Fairview on the shore of Lake Louise.

“I don’t know what to say,” Don Mironov, Gabriel's father, told the Calgary Herald from his home in the southern United States.

It changes my entire life. He was the focus of my life. I loved him dearly and he loved me dearly and so did the boy.”

Don told the Herald his son loved adventure and world travel, which likely drew him to Lake Louise for tobogganing.

A spokesperson confirmed to Global News that Oliver attended Selwyn House School in Westmount.

“Out of extreme respect for the family, we are not issuing a statement at this time," the school told Global.

It was a bad weekend for snow slides in western Canada.

A 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan died of injuries he suffered Friday night in an avalanche near Blue River, B.C., about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.

And a 38-year-old man from Calgary was critically injured Saturday when he and some fellow skiers triggered an avalanche in Alberta's Banff National Park.
