March 20 happens to celebrate a multitude of events in 2014 — World Happiness Day, the first day of spring, proposal day (if you're so inclined) and last, but certainly not least, Macaron Day.

Celebrated for the past nine years, World Macaron Day was created by Paris' Pierre Hermé, one of the world's most famous bakeries selling this tiny treat. The intention was to get people into the bakery to try out a macaron, and give money to charity (usually something children-related) at the same time.

Now the day has spread everywhere from New York to Tokyo to Toronto, with bakeries enticing customers with featured macarons and (usually) a feel-good element of giving to a worthy cause.

Those tiny candy-coloured confections, made from almond flour, eggs, sugar and food colouring, and sandwiching any variety of flavours, are hard enough to resist on a regular basis, so adding in a good deed only — cough, cough — sweetens the deal.

If there's a bakery nearby that you've been looking for an excuse to visit, consider Macaron Day your out — or in, depending on how you look at it. Here are 20 bakeries across Canada celebrating Macaron Day. Just try not to drool too much on your keyboard.
