High River family forced out by flood wins $1M home

An Alberta family flooded out of their home last June has won a house worth nearly $1 million.

High River resident William Rader won a show home in Red Deer through the STARS Lottery, which raised $11 million this year for the helicopter emergency rescue service.

Last June, his family home was damaged in flooding that devastated the Alberta town of High River.

“We were out of our home for almost two months,” said Rader in a press release. “To hear that we won a house is surreal. It’s a lot to let sink in.”

STARS lottery officials estimate the value of the Red Deer show home at $945,000.

Also announced Tuesday were the winners of show homes in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge.

Brodin Fyke of Lethbridge, who won a truck and travel trailer, said he buys tickets every year.

“My wife was in a motocross accident 10 years ago and was airlifted by STARS, so I believe this is a great cause to support,” said Fyke.
