Edmonton man sentenced to jail for 3 years for trying to smuggle weapons

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - An Edmonton man has been sentenced to three years in prison for trying to smuggle a large amount of firearms into Canada.

Kevin Lorne Swanson was arrested in August 2011 when border officers found 16 firearms, 10 prohibited magazine clips and one silencer concealed in crates on a flat-deck trailer at the border in Carway, Alta.

At the time, Canadian Border Services Agency director Kevin Hewson said "something wasn't right about Swanson and that he seemed nervous."

During a trial in February 2013, Swanson was found guilty of 34 charges relating to the illegal importation of firearms.

Along with the prison term, he received a 10-year weapons prohibition.
