If there are still people doubting that fashion has a problem with race, then take a look at this latest disaster, courtesy of Heidi Klum.
The "Project Runway" host recently dressed up "Germany's Next Top Model" contestants in "redface" and in Native American dress for a photo shoot. Ugh.
The models, who are Caucasian and Black, pose wearing Native headdresses, tribal-print blankets, fringe boots and pants and a curious pair of antlers, which totally reminds us of that crazy "True Detective" murder scene.
The outfits, which basically stereotype a whole population and their culture, were criticized by the model's Facebook fans after she posted a group of the pics to her page.
Some comments include:
Eva Rowan: "Thanks.. But, I am not your trend... I am not your stereotype!!!"
Steve Rodriguez: "I am native American and this is a German making fun of all my people."
Melanie J. Murray: "Disappointing. Cultural appropriation and redface are never okay, but with so many aboriginal women missing and murdered in Canada it is especially disturbing to see my culture erased and recreated in this manner."
It's disappointing to see that this is still going on in 2014 but as we saw last year, the fashion and entertainment industry is rife with examples of racism and other dubious practices. (See Michelle Williams's Another cover, No Doubt's music video.)
As of press time, Klum has not responded to the backlash.
