Snow, ice cause havoc on roads northeast of Edmonton, many collisions, one dead

LAC LA BICHE, Alta. - Snow and ice created havoc for a few hours on highways northeast of Edmonton.

RCMP reported 10 collisions on a 30 kilometre stretch of Highway 881, including five jackknifed semi trucks.

At one point police closed the highway at Heart Lake, but it is now reopened.

Earlier Wednesday RCMP closed Highway 36 south of Lac La Biche after a man died in a three-vehicle collision.

Two other men were in hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Highway 36 has reopened, but police say roads in the area are only in fair condition.
