4 icebound sealers safe after airlift off Fogo Island

Four sealers were airlifted Wednesday night from a vessel that got stuck in ice off Newfoundland's northeast coast.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said the crew were about 125 kilometres off Fogo Island, with icebergs bearing down on them.

A rescue crew aboard a Cormorant helicopter hoisted them to safety and then flew them to Gander.

The Canadian Coast Guard said the fishing vessel is now abandoned and adrift in the icefield.

The seal hunt opened earlier this week.
