Amid the growing controversy over Canadian restaurants using temporary foreign workers comes a job posting from a B.C. company that's just the opposite.
The ad calls for a "person raised and educated in North America, probably Caucasian, who is fluent at both English and Mandarin."
The ad also notes that the successful candidate for the four-month, temporary position will be the "only Western person" in Wistin's factory in China.
B.C.'s human rights code states:
A person must not publish or cause to be published an advertisement in connection with employment or prospective employment that expresses a limitation, specification or preference as to race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, political belief, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation or age unless the limitation, specification or preference is based on a bona fide occupational requirement.
A Wistin staff member told The Huffington Post B.C. on Monday that a manager would not be able to comment until later this week. We will update this story when we receive a response back.
In China, it's common for companies to "rent" white people to pose as employees as a way to impress clients, reported CNN. The network said some "jobs" involve Caucasians sitting in an office for a few hours a day near a window so customers can see them.
Growing numbers of English schools are hiring white people with little or no credentials, reported Vice.
However, the Wistin posting appears to require someone with some technical skills and "a confident personality that can handle the patient, persistent, repetitive, stubborn communication of ideas that is necessary to bridge the cultures."
