Justin Bieber's alleged use of cough syrup as a drug indirectly caused a drug company to pull the product Actavis off shelves earlier this month. Now Bieber is referencing the illegal drink known as "sizzurp" in his new single "We Were Born For This."
TMZ reports a snippet of the lyrics for the song go as follows: "but the boys and girls they don't know what love is like / love is like appreciation mixed in a double cup of Sprite."
"Yes, love is like an illegal narcotic concoction that might cause seizures," the outlet quips following an audio portion of Bieber singing the single. Sizzurp is a mixture of soda, often Sprite or 7-Up, and cough syrup poured into styrofoam cups. The slang term double-cup, which is also graffiti'd on Bieber's skate ramp, refers to sizzurp as you can see in these photos.
The video clip on TMZ continues with staff stating Bieber "has never publicly said or admitted the story we've been publishing for months" of his addiction to the drug. "This guy is actually putting out a single admitting to sizzurp use."
Sizzurp, also known as purple drank or lean, is a popular narcotic among the southern hip-hop community, and led to the death of legendary rapper Pimp C and the hospitalization of rap star Lil Wayne.
Twitter has started trending on the topic but a few people tweeted their thoughts on the single and its content:
Bieber hasn't commented on the lyrics thus far.
Last week, Bieber apologized for visiting the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, a war memorial which defends the country's aggression during wartime.
