Edmonton man loses appeal to stop extradition to U.S. on drug charges

EDMONTON - An Edmonton man has lost a bid to avoid extradition to the United States on long-standing drug charges.

Thomas Jeffrey Goodyer is charged in a plot to smuggle more than 100 kilograms of marijuana into the U.S.

Goodyer was arrested in Buffalo, N.Y., in November 2005, but returned to Canada before he could face trial.

The federal justice minister cleared the way to turn him over to American authorities for prosecution and Goodyer challenged that decision.

But Alberta's Appeal Court says there are no exceptional circumstances that would make Goodyer's extradition unacceptable.
