Number of GTA realtors has doubled in past decade

The city’s searing housing market is luring more realtors than ever before, according to new numbers reported by the Toronto Real Estate Board this week.

There are currently 40,000 realtors operating throughout the GTA, the board says, up from 20,000 ten years ago.

Historically-low mortgage rates and a surplus of buyers-to-be are driving people from all walks of life to try their hand at selling real estate, and potentially make some extra income in the process.

Indeed many of the city’s new realtors are people with other part-time jobs, or recent retirees, the board said.

But as the CBC’s Shannon Martin reports, it takes more than a salesperson's swagger to make it in one of the country’s most competitive marketplaces.
