We were pretty bummed that Kate Middleton didn't attend Prince William's charity dinner on Tuesday night, and it turns out, we weren't the only ones.

Fashion designer Ralph Lauren was one of the many stars in attendance -- he was being honoured for his contributions to cancer research throughout the years -- but he wasn't so keen to learn that the Duchess of Cambridge wasn't going to be attending.

When the Duke was introduced to Mr. Lauren and his wife, Ricky, he said to them, "I'm sorry my wife's not here, you probably would far rather you saw my wife." To which the American designer answered, "Not at all."

We guess he was just being polite, as it's now being reported that the 74-year-old was "furious when he found out less than six weeks ago that Kate would not be there." He also apparently tried to pull out of the event, but his PR team advised him that it would "look terrible" if he did so.

Some are speculating that Duchess Kate's absence might be a sign that she's indeed pregnant with a sibling to little Prince George, while it's also been reported that the royal couple attempt to "divide their appearances to keep the focus on the cause at hand."

To put all rumours to rest though, Lauren's rep concluded that the designer had "only ever been enthusiastic about attending the event."

We hope this means that the Duchess will be stepping out at an event soon!
