A newborn moose is lucky to be alive after its mother was hit by a car, and the impact of the accident expelled the calf from the pregnant animal on a highway in Quebec’s Saguenay region.

The mother was crossing Highway 170 in L’Anse-St-Jean on Sunday when struck by a car and killed.

The calf was expelled from the mother due to the force of the impact.

Witnesses to the accident found the calf, still in its gestational sac and covered in amniotic fluid, under the car that hit the moose.

They picked her up, covered her in a blanket and then called the owners of the region’s Falardeau Zoo, who came to pick up the animal.

Zoo officials are feeding the calf with moose milk from Ontario.

The 18-kilogram calf and the occupants of the car involved in the accident are doing well.
