The lanes will be reconfigured on both the Champlain and Nuns’ Island bridges, leaving only one lane open in each direction.
“This second weekend of major work of the 2014 season will allow us to work day and night on various projects,” said a statement issued Friday afternoon from the Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated.
The bridge corporation says the superbeam will not be removed this weekend — it will be done later this spring.
The 75-tonne superbeam was installed as a measure to strengthen the bridge, after a crack was discovered in a girder last November. The beam was supposed to be removed last weekend, but that work was delayed because of strong winds.
Although one lane will still be available on the Champlain and Nuns’ Island spans, officials are urging drivers to use alternate routes to travel between Montreal and the South Shore such as the Jacques-Cartier, Victoria, Honoré-Mercier bridges or the Lafontaine tunnel.
Highway 15, which leads to the Champlain Bridge, will remain open all weekend. However, the lane width will be reduced to three metres this weekend. Trucks that require wider lanes will have to find alternate routes.
