Man sustains minor injuries after grizzly bear encounter in Jasper

A Jasper man was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a run-in with two grizzly bears on Saturday night.

The man was mountain biking in Jasper near Cottonwood Slough, a popular hiking trail and biking area, when he ran into two grizzly bears.

The man was equipped with pepper spray and used it before calling 911. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries, including ones resulting from the pepper spray, and was later released.

Businesses in Jasper were informed of the incident shortly after it occurred.

Trails in the area were also closed on Saturday night but are now open. Crews are now searching for the two bears.

Parks Canada is advising people to make lots of noise when in the wilderness and to always carry pepper spray and a cell phone.
