City moves to replace entire Sony Centre board

Toronto city council may move to replace the board of directors of the Sony Centre after a scathing review of the performing arts centre’s ongoing renovations from the auditor general was published last month.

Coun. Shelley Carroll tabled a motion at a meeting of the city’s audit committee Wednesday that would ask city council to consider immediately replacing the board of directors with an interim board consisting of three councillors and three city staff members.

The motion was passed unanimously by the audit committee and will be voted on by council next month.

In April, Toronto Auditor General Jeffrey Griffiths released a report that said contracts for the $28-million renovation were awarded without competition, and found that many the contractual agreements lacked the appropriate paperwork.

The renovations are currently about $10 million over budget, and are expected to cost more than $40 million by the time they are finished.

Sony Centre CEO Dan Brambilla has declined to answer questions from the media on the renovation process.
