Douglas Larche Among RCMP Officers Killed In Moncton Shooting

Const. Douglas Larche Among Moncton Victims

Const. Douglas James Larche, 40, has been identified as one of three RCMP officers killed Wednesday by a Moncton gunman.

New Brunswick RCMP named the three officers who died in the line of duty at a press conference Friday morning, hours after the shooting suspect was caught by police. Const. David Ross, 32, and Const. Fabrice Gevaudan, 45, were also killed.

Const. Darlene Goguen and Const. Eric Dubois were identified as the officers who were injured in the shooting.

Larche was originally from Saint John, N.B., the RCMP said.

He was among the officers who responded to a report of an armed man in a residential neighbourhood on Wednesday evening. The gunman fled after opening fire on the Mounties, kicking off a 30-hour manhunt that put the city on lockdown.

The RCMP identified the suspected shooter as Justin Bourque, 24. He was captured by police just after midnight on Friday.

Assistant Commissioner Roger Brown, the Mounties' commanding officer in the province, says it will take time for the department to heal as he released the names of the officers who were killed and injured.

"Fortunately, most people will never have to experience what our officers have gone through in the past couple of days,'' he said Friday morning. "Their resilience is truly remarkable.''

Brown said members of the RCMP will rally around the families of the fallen and the injured officers as the city also deals with the aftermath of the shootings.

"This is not something that anybody wants to live through. We all know that. The only way that we're going to get through this is together,'' he said.

"This is the start of a very long road for all of us.''
