Michael Schumacher Awakens From Coma, Transferred To Rehabilitation Ward

AWAKE

Michael Schumacher has reportedly awakened from his coma.

After six months in a coma, the seven-time Formula 1 champion is "out of danger" and has been transferred to a rehabilitation ward, according to German magazine Bunte.

Schumacher was being treated at Grenoble hospital after sustaining severe brain injuries in a December skiing accident. Fighting for his life, Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma a month later.

Over the next couple of months, as reported by the National Post, doctors worked to bring him out of that coma -- into a so-called “wake up” phase that comes before full consciousness.

His manager, Sabine Kehm, released a statement indicating the 45-year-old has left the French hospital "to continue his long phase of rehabilitation."

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

She gave no further details on Schumacher's condition.

Autosport has published a letter from Schumacher's family, confirming "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore..

The statement added:

"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."
