Charlottetown Conference 2014 Gets $5 Million Boost From Harper

CHARLOTTETOWN - Celebrations in Prince Edward Island marking the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference will receive $5 million more from the federal government.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was in Charlottetown on Thursday to announce the additional funding for PEI 2014, a not-for-profit organization planning events marking the sesquicentennial of the Charlottetown Conference.

Earlier this month, the federal government said it will spend $10.1 million for repairs to Province House, the legislature in P.E.I., which is taking part in Charlottetown Conference celebrations.

Province House was where the Charlottetown Conference took place in September 1864. Talks during the Charlottetown Conference ultimately led to the Confederation of Canada three years later.

"Not for nothing do we call Charlottetown the cradle of Confederation," Harper said.
