Halifax downtown arena gets new corporate name, $5 million in facility upgrades

HALIFAX - A 35-year-old mainstay arena in downtown Halifax is getting a new corporate name — Scotiabank Centre.

The city says Scotiabank will spend $650,000 a year for 10 years under the deal, which includes naming rights to the Halifax Metro Centre and other sponsorship rights.

The money includes $5 million in capital upgrades to the facility, including the replacement of seats and renovating the washrooms.

The city says renovations will start this fall and will take roughly three years.

The arena is home to the local Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team, the Halifax Mooseheads, and has hosted a number of concerts and events over the past three decades.
