Kate And Prince William Need Double The Kitchens You Have

The renovations being done by Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton and her husband, Prince William, on their Kensington Palace apartment have been making headlines recently thanks to the seemingly astronomical bill that's being footed by British taxpayers (to date, the bill is £4 million, or $7.2 million Canadian). An additional £500 thousand is being spent on removing asbestos.

This week it was revealed that an additional change is being made to their residence that will puzzle most people — another kitchen is being put in, even though there's already a 350-square-foot, newly renovated kitchen in the four-storey home, according to Vanity Fair.

The new kitchen will be a "private, family kitchen," reports the Daily Mail, taking over what is currently an office.

However, this secondary kitchen isn't as rare as it might seem upon first glance. As Alice Arnold notes in the Telegraph, the larger room is fitted out with industrial-strength appliances, while the smaller kitchen is meant to be used exclusively by the royals. As Arnold adds, "It supposes that [Kate] might want to do a bit of cooking herself rather than depend entirely on staff."

In a press conference, a royal spokesperson was quick to note that all outfitting for this second kitchen will be paid for by the royals personally. And as a Clarence House spokesperson put it, according to EOnline, "Many young couples when doing up houses seek [financial] help from their parents or grandparents. There may have been some assistance."
