Canadian retailers — and therefore Canadian brands — are in trouble.

Faced with intense competition from the globalization of retail and the shift to online shopping, chains like Bata, Jacob and Zellers have closed their doors. Replacing them are major (primarily) U.S. brands, like J. Crew, Marshalls and Target. It's what one retail analyst called "the Americanization of Canadian retail."

Many observers predict that, at the end of the day, only Canada's retail behemoths, like Loblaws (which just bulked itself up with the purchase of Shoppers Drug Mart), will be left standing.

It's a matter of opinion whether the disappearance of Canadian retailers is a problem. But whether you believe we should protect Canadian stores or whether you believe it's time to join the global retail revolution, it's hard not to get a little sentimental when thinking about all the iconic Canadian brands we've lost in recent decades.
