Christian Ehrhoff signs 1-year deal with Penguins: report

The Pittsburgh Penguins worked quickly to offset the expected departures of unrestricted free-agent defencemen Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik.

Recently hired general manager Jim Rutherford acted on Day 1 of the free-agent signing season Tuesday, signing former Buffalo Sabre Christian Ehrhoff to a reported one-year contract worth $4 million US.

The 31-year-old Ehrhoff also made $4 million this past season with the Sabres, who bought him out on the weekend with seven years left on a 10-year, $40- million pact.

Ehrhoff put up 33 points and a minus-27 rating in 79 games in 2013-14.

He is only three seasons removed from a 50-point campaign with Vancouver.
