They say the internet has democratized innovation — anyone can raise money for their brilliant idea.
Of course, anyone can raise money to, say, make potato salad too.
Which is exactly what a Columbus, Ohio, resident who goes by the name of Zack Danger Brown has done.
“Basically I'm just making potato salad. I haven't decided what kind yet,” Brown’s Kickstarter project description stated.
Maybe it was the sheer absurdity of the idea, or maybe people just love potato salad, but Brown’s page raised nearly $8,700 as of Monday morning, and the campaign is open for another four weeks.
A Reddit user named ZTBrown says he is the man behind the campaign.
“I wanted to make potato salad. Now I want to do the most good with this opportunity. Potato salad seems to unite people of all backgrounds and I think that's really wonderful,” the Reddit user wrote.
As the money rolled in, Brown’s plans for the potato salad grew more extravagant. At $200, he promised better mayonnaise. At $1,000, he promised to live-stream the preparation process.
He’s now past all that, and planning to throw a potato salad party to which he will “invite the whole internet.”
Uh oh. Suddenly $8,700 is starting to look like not enough.
