Douglas Garland, 'Person Of Interest' In Missing Calgary Family Case, Has Criminal Past

The man taken into police custody over the weekend and called a "person of interest" in the case of a missing Calgary family has a criminal past involving identity theft and an illegal drug lab.

Several media sources have confirmed Douglas Garland was taken in for questioning on Friday.

Police spent the weekend searching fields around an Airdie property belonging to Garland's parents, in connection with the disappearance of five-year-old Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathy Liknes.

According to the Calgary Herald, RCMP were alerted to the property after a tip from the public matched Garland's green Ford F-150 truck to one spotted in a video taken near the Liknes home.

Garland was charged in 1992 after an illegal lab used to make synthetic drugs was discovered on the same property, reports Metro Calgary. He evaded arrest for seven years, before he was found living in B.C. under a stolen name.

The identity he was using belonged to Matthew Kemper Hartley, a 14-year-old Cardston boy who had been killed in a car crash in 1980.

Garland confessed to using the stolen identity in the '90s, after a tipster recognized him on the RCMP's most wanted list, CBC News reports. But Garland was charged again this weekend for recent use of the same identity.

Garland will make a court appearance today related to the charge.

Nathan and his grandparents disappeared on June 30 after the couple held an estate sale. Police have said there was evidence of a violent incident in the Liknes's home.

Police say they want to hear from anyone who has any information regarding the whereabouts of the missing people or recognizes the pickup that was captured on video.
