Baby dies in Highway 20 crash

A baby was killed Monday evening after a tractor-trailer hit a car on the shoulder of the highway near St-Hyacinthe.

The child, who was less than a year old, was in the car at the time of the crash at around 5:40 p.m. along with two adults. A third adult was outside the vehicle.

“The driver of the semi-trailer truck was going in the right lane of the highway and, for an unknown reason, the truck hit a car,” said Sgt. Claude Denis of the Sûreté du Québec.

Emergency crews used hydraulic equipment to free the passengers in the car.

“All the people were transported to hospital and unfortunately the little baby was pronounced [dead].”

The other three people suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Highway 20 west was completely closed for several hours while collision investigators were at the scene.

Denis said it’s still too early to determine the cause of the crash, but alcohol was not involved.
