Boys Left In Hot Truck Prompts Kelowna Man's Arrest

Kelowna Man Arrested After Boys Left In Truck In 33-Degree Heat

A 41-year-old Kelowna man was arrested after two boys were left in a pickup truck for nearly half an hour in the sweltering heat.

The vehicle was in the parking lot of a Walmart on Friday afternoon when temperatures outside hit 33 C, said Kelowna RCMP. Someone called police who found two boys, aged five and 10, inside the truck. They immediately got both children out and had them assessed by paramedics.

"Police believe the two boys had been in the truck for nearly 30 minutes and that their continued health was in jeopardy," said RCMP Const. Kris Clark in a statement.

The driver of the truck showed up shortly afterwards with an 11-year-old girl, and was arrested.

The man's identity and relationship to the children has not been disclosed.

Police are recommending that the man be charged with failing to provide the necessities of life. He's been released on a promise to appear in court in September.

As a heat wave sweeps a large part of the province, officials have been reminding people of the fatal dangers of leaving children and pets in hot cars.

"The temperature in a parked car, even in the shade with the windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill your pet or child," said a warning issued by the B.C. government. "The air in a car and upholstery heat up very quickly. This causes heatstroke in both pets and children, and they can become sick in less than 30 minutes."
