Farms, ranches across Alberta stage open-house and culinary events

EDMONTON - Garlic lovers will find plenty of foods to sample in Stony Lake next month — everything from pesto and chocolate chip cookies to frozen yogurt pops, all made with the pungent plant.

The town west of Edmonton is holding its "first annual Garlic Day," inviting visitors to join garlic field tours and discover recipes.

The event is part of Alberta Open Farm Days, when over 60 farms and ranches across the province open their gates to the public. Culinary events take place Aug. 23, followed by free open-house events on Aug. 24.

In southern Alberta at the Feast of Bergen, the menu will include local beef and lamb, produce, cheese and preserves.

There will also be a Ukrainian banquet and borscht cook-off in the village of Andrew, an organic field supper at Lac La Biche and a county pig roast in Lacombe.

Host farms include a state-of-the-art dairy facility in Yellowhead County, a bison ranch in Airdrie and an organic grain operation in Morinville. A list of sites is at
